SHORT LIST OF SUPPLEMENTS USED IN MENOPAUSE

  • Vitex ( Chaste Tree): botanical herb that has been used for centuries to help balance hormones; can have a weak progesterone like effect; → lowers prolactin and boosts dopamine, helps regulate irregular cycle of perimenopause.

  • Black Cohosh: Black Cohosh → mixed results for hot flashes not so much a phyto estrogen but interacts with serotonin, studies show safe for Breast CA

  • Magnesium and Taurine; multiple health benefits:

    • Taurine good for cardiovascular system, muscle building

    • Magnesium: Good for hot flashes, both Mg and taurine calm the brain and support GABA.  Can help with Migraine prevention, reduce prostaglandins, helpful for period pain, relaxes uterus

  • Mg Helps Vit D assimilation, promotes thyroid health, lowers inflammation, bone building.

  • Glycine (Mg Glycinate) or glycine supplement → builds collagen, helps with insulin resistance, calming, promotes sleep by boosting serotonin and melatonin

NATURAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT

  • Progesterone:

    • Compounded Progesterone:  Helps with mood, sleep and hot flashes.

    • With compounding can use progesterone apart from estrogen. Can use use slow release or Immediate release; can start at low dose from 20 mg to 300 mg.

    • Oral usually better for perimenopause, as helps with sleep, cream can be used for other symptoms.

    • Rx Prometrium (is a natural progesterone),  Can start @ 100 mg, good, but soaked in peanut oil, so if allergic to peanuts cannot use.

 

  • Estrogen:

    • Bioidentical estradiol is good for hot flashes, skin, brain, osteoporosis, mood.  Can be compounded at Licensed Compounding Pharmacy and start with very low doses, many formulations.

    • Other Natural Estrogens:

      • Climara Patch: Estradot, Estraderm, Estrogel   

      • Estradiol patch: Bioidentical Estradiol

      • Vivele Patch> Bioidentical estradiol

      • Vagifem Estradiol vaginal crème helps with vaginal dryness.
